DISTRIBUTION & PROPAGATION :

Throughout India, particularly in Vindhya & Saputara rock regions, Bengal, Bihar, M.P & Gujarat States, It is propagated by seeds.

 

DISCRIPTION:

A midium-sized armed deciduous tree upto 8 m high with straight, sharp, axillary thorns and yellowish brown shallowly furrowed corcky bark; leaves trifoliate, aromatic, alternate, leaflets ovate, crenate, pellucid - punctate, the laterals subsessile and t'he terminallongpetiolds; flowers greenish-white, sweet scented, in axillary panicles; fruits globose, woody berry with yellowish rind; seeds numerous oblong, compressed, embedded in orange brown sweet gummy pulp. Flowering - fruiting February to May.

 



CHEMICAL CONSTITUENTS :

Mucilage is active constituent. Unripe and Ripe fruits contain tannin. It also contains marmelosin a furocoumarin shown to be identical with imperatorin. Fruits contains two alkaloids (i) O. Methyl halfordinol, (ii) Isopentyl halfordinol.

 

PROPERTIES :

Roots - are sweet, astringent, bitter blood purifier and febriguge.

Leaves - are astringent" laxative, febriguge and expectotant

Fruits - unripe - are bitter, acrid, sour, astringent, stomachic, digestive etc.

Fruits - ripe - are astringent,sweet,aromatic, cooling, febrifuge, laxative and tonic.


 

Parts Used: Roots, Leaves, Fruits.

 

USAGES :

Roots - are useful in diarrhoea, dysenstry, dyspepsia, stomachalgia, vitiated, conditions of Vata, seminal weakness, uropathy, vomiting, intermittent fever and swellings,

Leaves - are useful in ophthalmia, deafness, inflammations, catarrh, diabetes and
asthmatic complaints.

Fruits-unripe - are useful in diarrhoea, dysentry and stomachalgia.

Fruits-ripe - are good for the heart burn, dyspepsia, diarrhoea etc.



 

DOSE :
Powder - 3 to 6 gms.

 

FORMULATIONS :
Bilvadi churna,Bilvadi taila,Bilvadi ghirta,Gangadhar churna,Bilvavaleha,Bilva jam, Dasmularisht, Murabbo,Syrup, Tincture of Aegle marmelos.

 

Note : It is a sacred tree and the leaves known as Bilipatra are used for worshipping the God Shiva. Tincture of Aegle marmelos is widely used in homoeopathy. Excess intake of bae! pulp produces atony of the intestinecausing flatulence constipation and heaviness.
