DISTRIBUTION & PROPAGATION :
Cultivated
and wild especially on the sea coast. Its origin is in South
America. In India, particularly in Goa, Maharashtra, Madras,
Kerala and Bengal. It is propagated by seeds in farms as fruit
crop.

DISCRIPTION:
A
small tree with short, thick, crooked trunk; leaves simple
large, obovate, rounded at the apex; inflorescence terminal,
longer than the leaves; flowers yellow, streaked with pink;
fruits greenish-grey, nuts on yellow or scarlet fleshy pedical.
Flowering – fruiting December to May.

CHEMICAL
CONSTITUENTS :
The
essential amino acids are arinine, histidine, phenylalanine,
lysine, methionine, threonine, tryptophan, lencine, isloeucine
and valine, alanine, aspartic acied, cystine, glutamic acid,
glycine serine and tyrosine. The testa is a good source of
tannins. The polyphenol identified in the testa are catchin,
epicatechin, ethylgallate, leucocyanidin, proanthocyanidin,
leucodelphindin and epiafazelchin.

PROPERTIES : Roots
– are considered purgative.
Bark – has alterative
properties.
Fruits - are acrid,
sweet, thermogenic, nutritive, aphrodisiac, trichogenous and
anthelmintic. |

USAGES :
Bark
– The gum form the bark is
recommended in leprosy, ringworm, corns and obstinate ulcers.
Bark
& Leaves – are useful in
odontalgia.
Fruits
- are useful in vitiated condition
of Vata and Kapha, skin diseases, dysentery, haemorrhoids and anorexia.
They are sued for preventing hair loss and to increase the growth
of hair. Thekernels constitute a highly nutritious and concentrated
food. A delicious drink is also derived from the spongy thalamus.

nut oil, Tincture of Anacardium occidentale, Sweets, Wine.

| Note
: plenty of dryfruit sweets are made from it.
Tincture of A. occidentale is used in homoeopathy. Excessive usages
of Cashew nut may cause ucers, indigestion, acidity, etc. |
