DISTRIBUTION & PROPAGATION :
Cultivated or seen wild in hedge - rows in the drier parts of India. It is propagated by root suckers in farms as medicinal crop. and in gardens as pot herb.

DISCRIPTION:
A coarse perennial with short stem and shallow root system; leaves simple, fleshy in rosettes, sessile, often crowded with horny prickles on the margins, convex below, 45 - 60 cm long, tapering to a blunt point, surface pale green with irregular white blotches; flowers yellow or orange elongated spikes in racemes; fruits loculicidal capsule. Flowering - fruiting December to May.

CHEMICAL CONSTITUENTS :
The plant contains Aloin, aloesone and aloesin. The leaves contain barbaloin, chrysophanol glycoside and the aglycone, aloe - emodin. The mucilage of the leaves contains glucose, galactose, mannose and galacturonic acid in addition to an unidentified aldopejl1ose and a protein with 18 amino acids.

USAGES :
Juice - is used in dyspepsia, amenorrhoea, burns, colic, hyperadenosis, hepatopathy, splenopathy, skin diseases, constipation, spanomenorrhea, vitiated conditions of Vata and Pitta, abdominal tumours, dropsy, carbuncles, sciatica, lumbago and flatulence.
Elio - is used for helminthiasis in children. It is used forlocal application in painful inflammations, chronic ulcers and catarrhal and purulent ophthalmia.

DOSE : Leaf juice - 10 to 20 ml ; Aloes (Powder) 100 to 300 mg.

Note
:
Aloes is a extract of Aloe vera. Procedure wise two varieties of aloes are: (i) Hepatic aloes - By mild heat; Non transparent solid ex!. (ii) Glassy aloes - By strong heat; Semi transparent solid ex!. Pregnant women should be avoided during pregnancy.
According to Indian pharmacopoeia three chief species are: (i) Curaccao aloes - Ex!. of Avera. (ii) Socotrine aloes - Ex!. of Aperryi. (iii) Cape aloes - Ex!. of A ferox.
Other different varieties are: Netal, Mocca, Jafarabadi, Barbados,.. etc.
Different species available are: (i) Aloe barbadensis (Aloe vera), (Ii) A Chinensis, (iv) A littoralis. Tincture of Aloe is used in homoeopathy. It has very good antiseptic property. |
