DISTRIBUTION & PROPAGATION :
It occurs in the Himalayas regions. It is also found in Europe and North Africa. It is propagated by seeds and corms.

DISCRIPTION:
An annual herb with cylindrical corm covered with numerous brown scales. Leaves simple, radical, narrow, oblong lanceolate, blunt. Flowers golden yellow, solitary or two. Fruit capsule. Flowering - fruiting during August to December.

CHEMICAL CONSTITUENTS :
Corm ( root stalk) contains colchicine an alkaloid, tannic acid, starch, sugar gum etc. Seeds also contain alkaloid, colchicine.

PROPERTIES : Corm (root) - is analgesic, blood purifier, sedative, anti-inflammatory, antineuralgic, aphrodisiac, carminative, alterative, aperient, laxative etc.

USAGES :
Purified and in low doses, it is employed in gout, leukaemia, neuralgia, itches, liver disorders, sexual debility, cancer, rheumatism, sciatica, lumbago, etc.

Note
: Bitter variety is highly poisonous, so thatuse under medical supervision only. It has been used also in the laboratory to create new genetic strains. Tincture of Colchicum is used in homoeopathy. There are two varieties (i) bitter and (ii) sweet.
Bitter variety is poisonous, Excess intake may cause renal damage, hair loss, muscular pain etc. It should be avoided during pregnancy. |
